Do you know any Japanese names? By the way, my name is Kazuyo Aono (青野和代). Aono is my family name (名字/苗字みょうじ). My given name is Kazuyo. We say it as “Aono Kazuyo.” A Japanese name is divided into a family name and a given name, but we call the combination of both “namae” (名前).
It is said that there are over 300,000 Japanese surnames, which is the most in the world. What do you think is the most common surname in Japan? In Korea, it’s Kim, in China, it’s Wang, and in Japan, it’s…?
As of 2025, the third most common name is Takahashi (たかはし), the second is Suzuki (すずき), and the first is Sato (さとう). By the way, Aono (あおの) is ranked 849th.
For non-Japanese people, reading and saying Japanese names can be difficult. So today, I’d like to talk about Japanese names.
日本人の名前で、知っている名前がありますか？ ちなみに私の名前は青野（あおの）和代（かずよ）です。青野は、名字/苗字（みょうじ）です。下の名前は和代です。「あおのかずよ」といいます。名前は、名字と下の名前にわかれていますが、名字と下の名前を合わせて、名前と言います。

2025年現在、3位は高橋（たかはし）さんで、2位は鈴木（すずき）さんです。1位は、佐藤（さとう）さんです。ちなみに青野は849位でした。
日本人の名前は、外国の人からすると、読むのも言うのも難しいと思います。それで今日は、日本人の名前についてお話をしようと思います。

What’s the difference between namae, shimei, and seimei?
The word for “name” is also referred to as “shimei” (氏名しめい) and “seimei” (姓名せいめい). “Namae” (名前なまえ) is used in all aspects of daily life. “Shimei” (氏名) and “seimei” (姓名) are often used in writing.
The term “full name” is also commonly used. When you write your name at a city hall, you are often asked to provide your “full name.”

名前は、「氏名（しめい）」「姓名（せいめい）」ともいいます。名前は、生活の全般で使います。氏名と姓名は、書き言葉で使うことが多いです。

The Origin of Japanese Surnames
Commoners were not allowed to use a surname until the “Heimin Myoji Kyoka Rei” (平民苗字許可令へいみんみょうじきょかれい), which was a law passed in the third year of the Meiji era (1870). As it is 2025 now, that was 155 years ago.
The “Heimin Myoji Kyoka Rei” (Commoners’ Surname Permission Order) essentially stated, “From now on, commoners are ‘permitted’ to use surnames.”
日本人の名字のはじまり
平民が自分の名字を名乗れるようになったのは、明治3年（1870年）「平民苗字許可令（へいみんみょうじきょかれい）」が出てからだそうです。今年は2025年なので155年前からということですね。
「平民苗字許可令（へいみんみょうじきょかれい）」は、「これからは、平民でも名字を使うことを“許可”しますよ～。」といったものです。
However, commoners feared that using a surname would mean they would be taxed, so they hesitated to adopt one. It seems that the fear of taxes is the same now as it was then. LOL.
Five years later, in the eighth year of the Meiji era (1875), the “Myoji Hissho Gimu Rei” (苗字必称義務令みょうじひっしょうぎむれい), or “Surname Compulsory Order,” was passed, making surnames mandatory. It was like saying, “All commoners must use a surname!”
ただ、平民は名字を名乗ると、現代でいう税金を取られるのではないか…、などの理由で名字をかったそうです。今も昔も税金が怖いのは同じですね。笑
5年後の明治８年（1875年）には「苗字必称義務令（みょうじひっしょうぎむれい）」が出て、「名字は義務」になりました。「平民も必ず苗字を使いなさい！使え！」って感じですね。
How Surnames Were Created
Commoners were free to choose their own surnames, and about 80% of them were based on place names. Knowing the origin (由来ゆらい) of a name makes it feel more personal.
My surname is Aono (青野あおの). This might mean “blue field” (青い野原あおいのばら), suggesting it was created based on a landscape (風景ふうけい). Knowing the origin (由来ゆらい) of a surname can make it easier to remember a difficult one.
名字のつけ方
平民の名字は自由につけてよかったそうで、約8割は地名からつけたそうです。名前の由来（ゆらい）がわかると、名前に親しみが湧きますね。
私の名前は「青野」なので、「青い野原（のはら）」という意味で、「風景（ふうけい）」から作った名字かもしれません。名字の由来（ゆらい）がわかると、難しい名字も覚えやすくなりそうです。

Rare Surnames
There are many rare surnames, so I’ll introduce a few.
There is a surname “Mitarai” (御手洗みたらい). It is read as “mitarai.” It is said to be the name of a place where one cleanses their mouth and hands before approaching a god. It is a name with a very pure meaning.
Some of you may have seen this name before. In Japan, the word “O-tearai” (御手洗おてあらい) is often written on the doors of public restrooms. It means “toilet.”
In Japan, many people believe that “there is a god in the toilet, so it must be cleaned beautifully.” There is even a famous song called “Toilet no Kamisama” (トイレの神様トイレのかみさま).
レアな名前
珍しい名字があるので、いくつか紹介します。
「御手洗」という名字があります。読み方は「みたらい」と読みます。神様の前に行く前に、口や手を洗って清める場所という意味の名字だそうです。とても清い意味をもつ名前です。
この名前を見たことがある人もいると思いますが、日本の「W・C」に行くと、ドアに「御手洗い」と書いてあります。トイレと同じ意味です。
日本では、「トイレにも神様がいるから、きれいに掃除をしないといけない」と思う人が多いです。「トイレの神様」という歌もあるぐらいです。
Another one is “Saemonsaburo” (左衛門三郎さえもんさぶろう). It’s a very long surname, read as “saemonsaburo.” It’s said that only 10 people in Japan have this surname.
It is a case where a first name became a surname. Doesn’t it remind you of Kamado Tanjiro (竈門炭治郎かまどたんじろう) from the anime “Demon Slayer”? Haha.
Besides these, there are other rare surnames like “Hozumi” (八月一日ほずみ) and “Nikumaro” (肉丸にくまる). The meaning behind each surname is truly interesting.
もう一つは、「左衛門三郎」です。とても長い名字です。「さえもんさぶろう」と読みます。全国に10人がこの名字を使っているそうです。
もともと下の名前だったものが名字になったケースだそうです。アニメ鬼滅の刃の「竈門炭治郎 / かまど たんじろう」を思い出しませんか。笑
この他にも「八月一日（ほずみ）」「肉丸（にくまる）」などの珍しい名字がありました。名字に、それぞれの意味が本当におもしろいです。
Conclusion
Today, we talked about Japanese surnames. I think it can be really difficult for Japanese learners to remember Japanese names. The pronunciation isn’t easy either.
I take attendance for my international students at school, and I mispronounce their katakana names every day. My tongue just doesn’t work right (ㅠ﹏ㅠ).
Still, I always smile when I call their names, and they always forgive me. You should also try to cover up your mistakes with a smile! (^^)!
